Sustainability. We Make It Happen

At Henkel we are committed to leadership in sustainability. With our pioneering spirit, knowledge and innovative technologies, we aim to drive sustainable development and shape a viable future for the next generations.

This is also reflected in our company purpose: Pioneers at heart for the good of generations.
At Adhesive Technologies we translate this purpose into real-world action – and make sustainability happen.

Our Focus Topics

Based on our deep understanding of the trends and challenges in the industries of our customers, we have identified three focus topics where we can drive the biggest impact with our solutions.

Climate: Decarbonizing our operations and raw materials and enabling emission reduction at our customers.

Circularity: Embedding circular practices in our own operations while enabling debonding and recyclability along the value chain.

Safety: Optimizing the chemical safety of our products and going beyond legal requirements.

How We Drive Impact – Our Ambition

The world is facing enormous challenges. We see it as our responsibility to contribute to solving these challenges by enabling sustainability through material science and scientific know-how in bonding, sealing and coating.

In light of this, we have developed our
Adhesive Technologies Sustainability Ambition 2030
which focuses on the topics that matter to our planet, our customers and our wider stakeholders, and summarizes both the global challenges and the efforts we take to address those.

To bring our ambition to life we drive sustainability in two key ways.

First, we lead by example and optimize our own footprint. By driving continuous improvement in our own operations while also accelerating the use of sustainable raw materials.

Building on that, we lead through technology. By providing innovative solutions that enable our customers to boost their contribution to sustainability.

And we do all this supported by end-to-end transparency, reliable data and consistent measurement.

We believe bold ambitions are the key to unlocking real-world progress.
In this spirit, we are making four promises for 2030 that will bring to life our vision of a sustainable future.

These four promises shape our daily business.
Scroll down to find out how we put them into action.

Sustainable Operations

Our promise: We will be the first global adhesives player with climate-positive operations by 2030.

What we aim for:

  • By 2030, all of our global sites will be climate-positive.
  • 100 percent of the electricity we use will come from renewable sources.
  • We will implement state-of-the-art technologies to generate thermal energy without fossil fuels.
  • And we aim for circular water use at key manufacturing sites as well as circular use of production waste material.

How We Get There

Using digital solutions and smart tech we accelerate energy efficiency and cut emissions at our sites. We will continue to install solar panels and thermal energy systems to generate our own renewable power – while also purchasing green energy from local suppliers and via large-scale virtual Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs).

In addition, our teams are adopting circular approaches for managing water and waste at key sites by creating closed-loop systems and increasing recycling at our sites. To minimize our impact on the local environment we ensure that key manufacturing sites save and reuse water through process optimization and wastewater treatment.

Success Stories

Carbon-neutral plant. Montornès, Spain.

By combining on-site renewable energy and green energy procurement our Aerospace plant in Montornès del Vallés, Spain reached carbon-neutrality. In 2021 the site was recognized as a global lighthouse and frontrunner in industry 4.0 by the World Economic Forum.

Renewable electricity. Maru, South Korea.

Our high-tech facility at the Songdo site in Maru, South Korea, is fully equipped with solar panels. The shingled panels incorporate Henkel's own innovative Electrically Conductive Adhesives (ECAs) to maximize power output and optimize reliability.

Circular water use. Jundiaí, Brazil.

At our site in Jundiaí, Brazil a water treatment facility processes rainwater for reuse in applications such as irrigation or for flushing toilets. This results in a significant reduction in water consumption and wastewater generation.

Sustainable Materials

Our promise: We will offer net-zero or low-emission products to all of our customers by 2030.

What we aim for:

  • We will transform our portfolio based on renewable carbon-based materials.
  • By 2030, we are going to cut the CO2 emissions from our raw materials by at least 30 percent.
  • We will pioneer industry transformation through dedicated programs and partnerships

How We Get There

We have defined a comprehensive strategy for cutting Scope 3 emissions - in line with the Science-Based Targets initiative’s pathway to net-zero. We are collaborating to assess the carbon footprint of every raw material we use and to identify ways of cutting the related emissions. Our experts are replacing fossil-based raw materials with ingredients from renewable carbon sources like biomass, recycling and atmospheric CO2. And we are connecting players from every step in our value chain through dedicated sustainability programs, projects and partnerships.

Success Stories

Bio-Based Adhesives. Technomelt Supra ECO

Technomelt Supra 098 Eco with up to 98 percent bio-based material (combination of direct bio-based and certified mass balance transfer raw materials) enables optimization of the carbon footprint of end products and packaging.

Bio-Based Adhesives. Loctite PUR Hot Melt.

Industry’s first bio-based polyurethane reactive (PUR) Loctite hot melt structural adhesive with 60 percent bio-based content from renewable, plant-based feedstock is a sustainable alternative for consumer electronics assembly.

Sustainable packaging. Ceresit Eco Bucket.

Ceresit's revolutionary eco packaging solution, the “Eco Bucket”, is made of 50 percent recycled plastic and 100 recyclable. The thin wall technology reduces raw material use and weight of the packaging.

Enabling Sustainability

Our promise: We will offer every customer solutions and services that enable emission reduction and circularity by 2030.

What we aim for:

  • As leading partner, we will co-innovate with our customers to excel in design-for-sustainability.
  • We will accelerate the development of debonding technologies to enable circularity along the value chain.
  • We will transform our portfolio towards driving positive impact along our sustainability focus topics.

How We Get There

Our teams are co-innovating with customers to design sustainable solutions for the specific challenges of each unique market and application. In line with this, we are implementing a center of excellence for debonding technologies, where we leverage our cross-industry expertise to create effective new solutions that enable reuse, repair and recycling. Building on our established Sustainability Portfolio Assessment, we transform our portfolio even more strongly to drive a positive impact along our focus topics. To maximize transparency, we strive to audit and publish the methodology and results behind this approach.

Success Stories

Enabling emission reduction. Loctite Aquence.

Our high-impact water-based bonding technology for sport shoes enables a CO2 footprint reduction of up to 30 percent in the adhesive bonding process at our customers.

Enabling circularity. Teroson RB 4040.

This debondable non-reactive hotmelt adhesive allows to re-open headlamps for component repair without damaging the lens or housing.

Enabling safety. LINATEX® LOCTITE® - LINA 88™ adhesive range.

Mining industry’s first solvent-free adhesive for rubber lining applications with zero volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which was developed jointly with our customer Weir Minerals.

Transparency

Our promise: We will deliver 100 percent end-to-end transparency on the sustainability of all of our products in line with leading standards by 2030.

What we aim for:

  • Data transparency on the individual cradle-to-gate and use phase sustainability impact of our products will be made available to all of our customers.
  • We will provide comprehensive data about our portfolio as an integral part of all customer interactions.

How We Get There

We are creating a consistent model for end-to-end product life cycle analyses - from raw material sourcing to the use phase and end-of-life disposal. This will enable us to share details about the carbon footprint of every Henkel product and provide traceability about the origin of our raw materials. To ensure data comparability we add related certifications wherever possible and adhere to leading standards.

Success Stories

To pioneer in transparency we joined Catena-X, a pan-European network that aims to standardize the methodology for calculating footprints and the associated data exchange for all participants in the automotive value chain.
