How to Remove LOCTITE 2620 Red Threadlocker

One of the questions we get asked pretty frequently around here is, “How do I remove LOCTITE® 2620™ Red Threadlocker?” While our red high-strength threadlocker is considered a permanent assembly method, it can be removed if you know the right technique.

Removing the red threadlocker involves heating the nut and bolt for a couple of minutes to a temperature of 500°F (250°C), applying localized heat using a blowtorch, for example. This will soften the thermoset plastic in the threadlocker. Once your nut and bolt is heated up, grab your hand wrench and take the assembly apart.

This short video gives a demonstration on removing red threadlocker:

We recommend using LOCTITE® 2620™ Red High Strength Threadlocker on fasteners up to ¾” (19mm) in size. It will secure parts that need to withstand heavy shock, vibration, or extreme chemical or environmental conditions. Typical applications include:

  • Suspension bolts
  • Motor and pump mounts
  • Bearing cap bolts and studs

Depending on your job, you may want to consider using our blue medium strength threadlocker, which is removable with hand tools, or one of our other formulations.
