During transport and delivery, consumer goods stored inside cases and cartons need to be protected. For this reason, external packaging needs to provide structural integrity to keep the valuable contents inside safe. With increased demands toward both efficiency in production as well as sustainable designs to meet recyclability regulations, packaging production manufacturers are faced with many challenges.

Not only do case and cartons need to have durable and sustainable designs, the carton sealing glue used in the designs also need to be able to be opened easily once they reach their final destination. Henkel’s range of case and carton sealing adhesives have been created with consumers in mind. Our products are designed to improve efficiency while offering high tack and heat resistance, so your products arrive safely at their destination.

Carton Sealing

Carton sealing provides the durability and strength required to keep goods safe during transport. Henkel’s carton sealing adhesive solutions offer high impact-solutions that offer excellent adhesion to a wide range of protective coatings, as well as meets FSSC 22000 food safety assurance standards.

As an industry leader in adhesives, developing innovative and sustainable carton sealing solutions is something Henkel is committed to providing for both consumers and manufacturers. Our range of TECHNOMELT® hotmelt adhesives offer excellent bond strength and improved durability.

Henkel’s portfolio of carton sealing glue adhesives meet global regulatory compliance and product requirements while increasing efficiency and stream-lining manufacturing processes. Additionally, our food safe carton glue adhesives that are designed for food and beverage packaging applications.

Tray Forming

Cardboard trays are commonly used to transport fruit and vegetables from the field and then to distribution center or market. Tray forming adhesives facilitate the handling of products to the point of sales by providing a durable and food safe bond.

Henkel’s portfolio of tray forming hot melt adhesives – TECHNOMELT® – addresses various performance requirements such as thermal stability and food safety requirements. Every consumer has specific needs that need to be met, such as protecting produce from crushing and contamination, prevent leakage and spillage, as well as meeting sustainability regulations for reuse and/or recyclability.

Packaging Equipment Additions

Improving packaging line equipment and systems increases efficiency and helps to prevent costly delays caused by equipment malfunctions. Equipment enhancements can be used to in case and carton sealing applications to improve precision dispensing, centralize adhesive loading processes, and keep temperatures consistent. Henkel offers the following packaging equipment additions:

  • Bulk Bags
  • Shuttle systems
  • Heated Pumps

Bulk Bags

Henkel’s Universal Bulk Bag System provides “spill free” dispensing and optimizes production lines by securely holding a variety of different bag types. Installing a bulk bag system ensures that packaging lines are supplied with a consistent and reliable supply of hot melt adhesive material. The easy-to-implement Bulk Bag Rack reduces waste and improves production efficiency and safety while optimizing space. Our Bulk Bag System is designed with steel construction and can be easily used with a forklift. It includes a universal fit for a variety of bag styles and offers multiple mounting locations that securely hold the bag in place. The innovative design can be easily adapted to meet your specific production needs.

Shuttle System

A shuttle system can be easily implemented into existing auto-feed systems and centralizes the adhesive loading process. By keeping tanks full, issues such as thermal shocking can be avoided, thus reducing nozzle and filter clogs. Henkel’s Shuttle System minimizes waste caused by spillage and thermal shocking as well as reduces risk of contamination by lowing exposure to the external environment. By implementing our innovative equipment solution, production efficiency, and safety.

Heated Pumps

Heated pumps can be used to enhance production equipment and increase production efficiency. Henkel’s innovative Heat Pump technology improves precision handling and provides additional support by monitoring and controlling the speed of the pump to maintain optimal viscosity. This also helps the adhesive to maintain a consistent temperature, thereby reducing clogs in the nozzle. Additionally, our Heat Pump system fits on existing adhesive pails and creates a waterproof seal for easy implementation.

Troubleshooting Packaging Applications

Speed and efficiency are extremely important factors when it comes to packaging production lines. However, there are many factors that can cause unexpected downtimes that can be costly for manufacturers. Our experts have developed troubleshooting tips for common issues case and carton sealing manufacturers face to help prevent delays and provide high quality and reliable packaging for consumers. These include:

Pop Opens

Pop opens are a common packaging challenge that can happen on production lines, in transit or during delivery, causing expensive delays and effecting brands reputation. There are many possible reasons why the hot melt adhesive used to seal cases or cartons can pop open, such as the application settings, processing conditions, and bond failure due to external ambient temperatures. For this reason, troubleshooting hot melt pop opens is necessary to determine exactly what is causing the pop opens in order to fix the issue and prevent production downtimes.

Stringing

When hot melt adhesives do not properly separate from the applicator nozzle during application to cases or cartons, the adhesive can leave thin strands that float around the air. Besides the messy appearance, these strings can cause issues along the production line that lead to costly delays. There are a number of steps that can help prevent stringing, such as reducing the distance between the nozzle and the package and changing the configuration and nozzle type.

Char

When hot melt adhesive is heated for too long or at a temperature that is too high, the material can begin to burn, clogging filters, nozzles, and hoses while causing extensive production delays. Once char begins to form it is extremely difficult to remove, so preventing hot melt char is important for efficient production lines and reducing material waste.

Tank Pressure

Proper tank pressure is an important factor in keeping production lines running smoothly and avoiding unnecessary delays. As a key component of any hot melt adhesive system, tank pressure along with nozzles and application temperature determine the flow and dispensing rate during production. Thus, optimizing and maintaining proper tank pressure is important to prevent application issues or adhesive build up that can cause costly production downtimes.

Tank Refilling

In order to ensure that products arrive safely and securely at their final destination and prevent unplanned downtimes on the production line, it is important to establish a routine for hot melt tank refilling. Properly filled tanks keep the packaging adhesive at a constant temperature and prevent char from forming.

Nozzle Size

Precision and speed are two important factors for efficient packaging production lines. Therefore, it is essential to select the optimal size nozzle in order to have the correct flow and dispensing amount.
