As lightweighting becomes increasingly important in car design, new and innovative engineering solutions are necessary.

To achieve light weighting, car manufacturers are optimizing the car body by reducing metal sheet thickness and reducing the number of parts while at the same time meeting performance standards. This requires new engineered solutions, that not only considered optimized design and proper material properties, but also cost effectivity and sustainability.

Henkel’s high-performance structural insert engineered solutions can be used to increase stiffness, section rigidity and can be used as energy absorption element in crash events. It also enables light-weighting design not only by using downgauged body sheet panel thickness but also by reducing the number of parts. The optimum result can be achieved when the structural insert solution is being considered from the very early design stage of car development. Henkel study of light-weighting a BEV design concept by using structural insert shown of a potential in saving weight down to 42 kg in BIW and closure while achieving the same level performances under various crash and stiffness load cases.
