Inverter Thermal Interface and Gasketing Materials

Multi-material thermal management and sealing solution

Inverters are a crucial component in electric vehicles (EV) serving the purpose of converting DC (direct current) to AC (alternating current). Technical issues with the inverter could introduce safety hazards such as short circuits as well as vehicle reliability concerns. To optimize EV lifetime performance and safety, power electronics design engineers seek to optimize thermal management as well as electrical insulation of their components. To avoid any kind of passenger risk, it is imperative that the Thermal Interface Materials (TIM) used to achieve these performance objectives are proven solutions for existing applications.

A leading automotive supplier collaborated with Henkel to identify the best fit TIMs for its new high-voltage inverter. BERGQUIST® TGF 3600, a liquid 3.6 W/mK gap filler, and BERGQUIST® TGP 1000V0US, an ultra-soft gap pad, were recommended to optimize thermal performance and protect against electrical hazards. As both materials were already OEM- and Tier 1-approved, material performance risks were mitigated. In addition, LOCTITE® SI 5970 was selected as the gasketing solution because of its chemical compatibility with the TIMs, eliminating potential curing issues. The materials are currently being used by the Tier 1 Supplier, enabling a production capacity of over 400,000 inverters annually.
