New toughening technology for weight savings

JEC Europe, the biggest composites exhibition in Europe, will open its doors from March 27 to 29 in Paris, Porte de Versailles. Henkel, the worldwide leading producer of adhesives, will present composite solutions for the aerospace industry. This year, the main focus is on the innovative curing epoxy-based composite surface film Hysol EA 9845 SF enabling 30 percent weight saving, as well as the high temperature modified epoxy film adhesive Hysol EA 9658 having excellent high temperature strength and long term thermal durability.

The trade fair will showcase more than 1,150 exhibitors in 2012, representing 100 countries worldwide. Henkel as the world leader in adhesive technologies will be presenting two innovations for the aerospace industry. New methods and products from Henkel for the fabrication of composite parts, lead to easier and cost-efficient production processes as well as to higher end product performance.

Durable high quality paintable surfaces with Hysol EA 9845 SF
With the increased use of composite solutions in the aerospace industry, there is a need for high quality surfaces of the composite parts.  Hysol EA 9845 SF .020 PSF (98g/m2), is an epoxy-based composite surfacing film, which contains a non-woven fabric, designed to improve the surface quality of honeycomb stiffened composite parts. The product reduces surface imperfections, provides a 30% weight savings compared to current surfacing films and minimizes prepaint preparation. In addition, lightning strike configurations are available.

Following an ongoing engineering trend toward lightweight construction ,aircraft manufacturers can save up to 30 per cent weight with Hysol EA 9845 SF. Through its low areal weight, the surfacing film from Henkel minimizes core crush and reduces core mark-through. The increased resistance to UV radiation before painting eliminates the need for sanding and rework prior to painting. Even without sanding, Hysol EA 9845 SF guarantees good paint adhesion which, increases the durability of the finished surface of the composite part. Moreover, the improved chemical resistance to paint strippers reduces masking labor time which in return lowers composite part finishing costs. The surfacing film provides additional flexibility in that it can be cured in the range 120ºC to 176ºC. The innovative Hysol EA 9845 SF can be applied to fuselage, wings, engine cowlings , and control surfaces among others.

Excellent high temperature strength and long term thermal durability with Hysol EA 9658
Hysol EA 9658 is a new technology, nacelle film adhesive for the aerospace industry. It combines high temperature strength controlled flow to minimize hole blockage and flash/ flow clean up in the shop. The innovative product features approximately three times the toughness of industry standard high temperature film adhesives and is suitable for metal, composite and honeycomb bonding where continuous exposure to temperatures up to 177 degrees Celsius is important.

For acoustic applications product variations are available with unsupported material.
