Webinar "Composite Surfacing and Lightning Strike Protection" 

Surfacing films are designed to improve the surface quality of honeycomb stiffened composite parts. They also provide a barrier for dissimilar materials, decrease surface preparation time and provide protection of structural fibers. But this is not all: Laminated films composed of a surfacing film and a conductive metal foil protect the composite structure from damage caused by lightning strikes. Henkel will be holding a webinar on “Composite Surfacing and Lightning Strike Protection” on August 13th, 2014 at 08:00 PM (CET). Mr. Steven Cunningham will give an overview about surfacing films for aircrafts.

Last week, for the ninth time, the Hockenheimring – one of Germany’s F1 racing venues – was transformed into a place of creative craftsmanship: 115 contestants from around the world were competing against one another in constructing a race car for this year’s “Formula Student Germany” contest. At the beginning of June this year, Henkel hosted a “Henkel High Tech Adhesives & Coatings Academy” event at the “High Tech Campus” in Eindhoven, the Netherlands. The aim was to provide customers in the electronics industry and other industries with first-hand information on high tech adhesion programs for markets where smart engineering and technology makes the difference. As well as attending modular presentations and a product exhibition, customers also had an opportunity to talk in depth to the Henkel experts present.

DNV GL, one of the leading certification bodies, recently completed a thorough testing program to confirm that Henkel’s repair system is meeting all requirements of the global quality standard ISO/TS 24817. It defines the design, installation, test and inspection criteria for the use of composite repair systems for oil and gas pipelines and pipework carrying petrochemical media.

The Future of Automotive Painting 

Henkel received two coveted awards at this year’s SURCAR, the world’s leading conference on the subject of automotive surface treatment. The event has been taking place every second year in Cannes (France) since 1964. In addition, the conference moved to Asia Pacific this year, an important region for automotive growth. Over 300 decision makers from more than 20 countries met in Shanghai (China) for the very first time. Under the motto “Growth Facing Sustainability” the focus was on new, innovative technological trends in the fields of painting and coating as well as on automotive paint finishing, especially in the Asian market. A simple change to the waste water process at Henkel’s adhesive plant in Seven Hills, Sydney, has had a major impact on the amount of waste water the plant produces and, within six months, the team had achieved its goal of reducing process waste water generated by 50 per cent.

During a special ceremony at last week’s APEX event in Las Vegas, Nevada, Henkel’s Electronics business won NPI Awards for both its high-reliability solder system – Loctite Multicore HF 212 flux medium and 90iSC alloy – and Loctite TAF-8800 thermal absorbent film. Hosted by Circuits Assembly magazine, the NPI Awards evaluate competitive products against one another using very stringent criteria that assess innovation, compatibility, cost-effectiveness, design, speed/throughput improvements, ease of use, and maintainability and reparability. The Henkel materials solutions emerged as clear winners in the respective categories of solder materials and adhesives.

This fully automatic monitoring, measuring, metering and control concept means that gauging and replenishment errors by operators can be extensively avoided and process costs substantially reduced. A comprehensive master program is currently being installed at the premises of autobody fabricator Tofaş in Turkey. Henkel is also developing a Windows program and an app for the mobile control of such systems.

Henkel sponsored a team of extreme athletes – under its Loctite brand – to compete in a variety of events such as the SnoCross Freestyle, SnoCross Long Jump, Snowboarder X, Snomobile SnoCross, and Snowmobile SnoCross Adaptive at the 2014 Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado in mid-January. Over 108,000 enthusiastic fans attended the event at Buttermilk Mountain, where the X Games have been held for the past 12 years. A record-breaking 48,000 people packed the venue on Saturday to see athletes compete in SnoCross, Snowboarding, and Skiing.

Solutions solve challenges of heavy machinery makers 

It is a machine of superlatives: four floors high, 82 meters long or the length a high-rise building of 20 floors lying on its side. This monster is heavier than a dozen 747 jumbo jets and creeps forward through the earth behind a more than 9 meter tall rotary cutting head. What may sound like science fiction is, in fact, the description of a giant tunnel boring machine (TBM) that was constructed using adhesives from Henkel.
